Of all the composers Victoria de los Ángeles sang in recital, the one she performed most often was Franz Schubert. And while she did sing some of the Winterreise Lieder such as Gute Nacht, Das Wirtshaus or Frühlingstraum, she never performed what is probably the composer's most famous cycle. Some singers did tackle it, Lotte Lehmann and later Christa Ludwig or Brigitte Fassbaender, the latter becoming an unquestionable reference. What would the version of Victoria de los Ángeles that Schubert loved so much have been like?
In this version, tenor Mark Padmore and pianist James Baillieu perform the emotional journey par excellence, that of unrequited love and the ensuing desolation.
